Comparison
Moom or Universal Display Magnet
Both save window layouts and put them back. Moom is built around reusable window actions; Universal Display Magnet is built around your displays and all your Macs.
The short answer
- Choose Universal Display Magnet if the monitor arrangement itself keeps changing, you want windows put back on their Desktop, or you use Universal Control between Macs. It costs $9.99, one time, for three Macs.
- Choose Moom if you want custom window actions you can chain together, drop zones to drag windows onto, and saved layouts for your apps. It costs $15 (checked 3 November 2026).
- Both save and restore window layouts, so that alone isn't a reason to pick one over the other.
Restoring windows or arranging displays
There are two different things a Mac can get wrong after sleep or a reconnect, and they need different fixes.
- Where windows sit on your screens. This is what a window layout restores, in Moom or in Universal Display Magnet.
- Where the screens sit relative to each other. macOS keeps a position for each monitor, the one you set in System Settings → Displays. If macOS swaps two monitors or moves one, the pointer crosses at the wrong edge, and a window layout put back onto that arrangement can still land on the wrong screen.
Universal Display Magnet handles the second one first:
- Display arrangement. A visual editor where displays snap flush, Snap All to pull every display together, and Apply with 15 seconds to click Keep before it reverts. The arrangement is saved for each set of monitors and put back when they reconnect or the Mac wakes. Display arrangement
- Workspaces. A workspace saves the monitor arrangement and every included app's windows: which monitor, which Desktop or full-screen Space, and where. Automatic snapshots put windows back when a set of monitors reconnects or the Mac wakes with its displays changed. Workspaces
- Universal Control. With several Macs, display positions span all of them. Universal Display Magnet shows every Mac's displays and lets you drag the other Macs' displays flush against yours. Universal Control
- Sync between your Macs. Arrangements and workspaces sync directly over your local network, encrypted, with no cloud. Mac sync

Price and license
- Moom: $15, or $8 to upgrade, as listed on its website on 3 November 2026. A purchase includes at least one year of updates, and you can keep using the version you're entitled to after that. A trial is offered; we didn't confirm how long it lasts or how many Macs a license covers.
- Universal Display Magnet: $9.99, one-time purchase, with tax added at checkout where applicable. One license covers three Macs. The app keeps working offline for up to seven days after its last successful license check. See license and updates.
Using both
You can run Moom and Universal Display Magnet together. Two apps can't own the same shortcut, and Universal Display Magnet flags any snapping shortcut another app already uses, in Window Snapping, so you can change it or turn it off in one of them.
If both apps restore window layouts, give that job to one of them, so they don't move the same windows at the same time. A simple split: Moom for window actions and layouts, Universal Display Magnet for the display arrangement and Universal Control.
What Moom does well
Moom is much more than a snapping tool. Its website, checked 3 November 2026, describes:
- Saved layouts for specific apps or for any window, so a whole arrangement of windows comes back when you ask for it.
- Custom actions that move and resize windows the way you define, and chains that run several actions in a row.
- Drop zones: areas of the screen you drag a window onto to place it.
If your windows scatter and you want them back in place, Moom's saved layouts already cover a lot of that. Moom's documentation may describe more ways to run a layout automatically, for example when your displays change. We didn't check those details, so the table marks them Not checked rather than no.
